This is an example of a ballasted roof mounted system we installed on an apartment building in Kingston in 2010.

The first thing that should be considered when looking at a ballasted solar system is the roof structure.  A structural engineer will need to inspect the roof to see if the roof can take the extra weight of the ballasted solar system as well as snow and wind loads. Once the roof is determined structurally sound, then you can proceed with the application process and take out a building permit and completing the OPA and Hydro applications.

Depending on the height of the building, a crane may be required to lift the equipment on to the roof.
